Hunger advocates in Southwest Arkansas and Northeast Texas and will be wearing orange on September 13th in an effort to raise awareness of the estimated 50 million people in the US who face hunger. This is one of the many awareness events taking place throughout the month of September in recognition of Feeding America's Hunger Action Month - a month-long campaign to help end hunger in our country.

According to a press release, starting September 1, Harvest Regional Food Bank and other food banks in the Feeding America network, will host events throughout the month to inspire people to take action to help the millions of people who are food insecure in the United States. These events are part of Harvest Texarkana’s ’30 Ways in 30 Days Campaign,’ identifying simple ways the public can pitch in toward the effort to eliminate hunger in our region.

Harvest Food Bank will kick off national Hunger Action Month on Tuesday, August 28th, with their annual Hunger Action Luncheon, taking place at noon at Williams Memorial United Methodist Church. The luncheon will feature guest speakers on the impact of hunger and testimonials. Tickets for the luncheon are $10 and reservations can be made by calling 870-774-1398 or e-mail development@hrfb.org. Carry out lunches can also be ordered in advance.

According to Camille Coker Wrinkle, Executive Director of Harvest Regional Food Bank, over 55,000 people struggle with hunger in the Texarkana area. “Hunger doesn’t have a season, but for the month of September, we want to raise as much awareness as possible about the issue, especially in our own community. One in 6 adults and 1 and 4 children deal with a lack of food. These are the people we live and work with every day.”

Texas Roadhouse, El Chico, Taste and See Candies, Chipotle, Fairfield Inn & Suites, and Raising Cane’s will all hold special promotions to benefit the food bank. Several volunteer events are also scheduled for the month and Hunger Action Month t-shirts can be ordered from Harvest Regional Food Bank for $20-22, depending on shirt size.
