Why Americans Celebrate the 4th of July [VIDEO]

Today is Independence Day. Americans will be celebrating this mid-summer holiday at the lakes, in the pool, in the backyard with friends cooking out or just relaxing on vacation watching a fireworks show. But do you really know what you are celebrating?Since 1941 the Fourth if July was designated a federal holiday in the United States. In June 1776 during the American Revolution representatives of the 13 colonies fought to find a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates adopted the now historically famous Declaration of Independence drafted by Thomas Jefferson. This was the beginning of celebrations, which included firework shows, parades and family BBQs.

John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826--the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
