The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana hosted a new event for young women from local Arkansas high schools. The event, 'Be A Model, Break The Mold' gave these young women an opportunity to check out non-traditional careers for women. 

According to the press release, the event was held in conjunction with Southwest Arkansas Education Cooperatives, including De Queen-Mena Education Service Cooperative, South Central Service Cooperative, and Southwest Arkansas Education Cooperative.

Director of Business and Industry Training,  Akili Moses-Israel said,

"We hope this event helped open the eyes of these young women to good career fields that they may not have previously considered."

The women were able to learn about industries with nontraditional careers. The UAHT Technical and Industrial Division helped introduce them to welding, industrial maintenance, electricity, diesel mechanics, information technology, coding, business, solar power, and HVAC.

82 students attended the event from high schools in Southeast Arkansas including Genoa Central High School, Mineral Springs High School, Blevins High School, Fouke High School, Hope High School, Nevada High School, Spring Hill High School and Harmony Grove High School.

UAHT has classes that train in these areas and some of these certifications can be earned while still in high school. Anyone interested in doing this should contact the  Secondary Career and Technical Education Center about for more information. Registration for spring classes at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana is open now through January 12, 2022 with classes beginning Monday, January 10, 2022.
