Texarkana’s Mr. Ed Says Shining Shoes Gave Him Focus
Ed Gooden is a shining example of a long-term, well-loved and dedicated employee.
"Mr. Ed" as he's affectionately called by employees and customers alike at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, has been shining shoes with the hospital since 1959 -- about 58 years -- and he's been in the field since he was 8, said Stacye Magness, Marketing/Communications Coordinator with the hospital.
Mr. Ed, the hospital's Chief Shoe Shiner, turned 90 on Friday.
Magness said Mr. Ed used to be a self-described “mischievous kid,” but shoe shining gave him focus when he was 8 years old.
I love the people here -- meeting them, talking to them, eating with them, and praying for them.
Mr. Ed is also a preacher, and defines the point that he found God as the most important moment in his life.
"Even at the age of 90, he continues to minister to every individual he meets at CHRISTUS St. Michael and is well known throughout the hospital and our community," Magness said of the hospital legend.
But like all great men, Mr. Ed downplayed the impact he truly has on people's lives.
“I’m just a hardworking country boy,” Mr. Ed said.
"I love the people here -- meeting them, talking to them, eating with them, and praying for them."
