The City of Texarkana, Texas Parks & Recreation Department will hold the 26th Annual Texarkana Fishing Derby, beginning at 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on February 22 & 23.

This event is for special needs children and adults in our area, and this year will move to a new location at Grady T Wallace park in Liberty Eylau. on an ADA accessible fishing dock. The reason for the move is the ongoing renovations at Spring Lake Park involving the dredging of the lake and the new stone reinforcement.

This will be the 25th year for a day of fishing and fun that none of the participants will soon forget. Texas Parks & Wildlife, Fire Department, Police Department, Texarkana Challenged Outdoorsmen, and the City of Texarkana, Texas Park & Recreation department is working toward another successful fishing event.

Last year, the derby welcomed over 500 participants from local school districts special education departments, group homes, work activity groups, assisted living homes and individuals.  In a festive atmosphere, over 50 volunteers and 30 parks personnel helped the inspired fishers with baiting, hooking, catching and ultimately cleaning the fish to take home. Games, prizes, treats and over 1,000 hotdog meals were cooked and served in a seated picnic area.
