Now the gas is going up and up and up we may be pushing how far each tank will go, now more than ever. But how far can your car go when your gas light comes on?

There are different thoughts on how long a car can go when the dreaded gas light comes on. Most people assume it is 50 miles, but we have a website that gives you a specific answer for your car.

Tank On Empty is a great website where people report exactly how long their car actually traveled once the gas light came on. That way, you can look up your make and model and see the average distance it has gone. According to the site, my 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport should be able to go 40.86 miles once the light comes on.

Here are some of the more popular cars and how far they can go when the gas light comes on.

But don't get too brave by these numbers and run your car on fumes, because doing so on a frequent basis can wear out the fuel pump. Modern vehicles use an electric fuel pump, which is inside the fuel tank and relies on gasoline to keep it cool. Most car manufacturers want you to keep at least a quarter tank full to prevent premature wear.

I for one always look to fill the car up the minute my fuel light comes on. My wife on the other hand tries to get every mile out of her tank of gas. Any way you look at it most cars have a pretty big reserve of fuel once the gas light comes on. How far do you drive once the fuel light comes on?
