Historic SAU Building Restored to Former Glory

How great is this? I love to see our history preserved and if you have ever been to the campus of Southern Arkansas University then you most likely have seen the beautiful historic Bussey Hall. It is one of the landmarks on campus.

Now it's back to its original glory thanks to renovations made from a grant made by the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council (ANCRC).

The grant was $698,060. This makes it the largest grant the university has ever received from the ANCRC.

The list of renovations is massive including removing and replacing the attic insulation. They also replaced the roofing and decking. New improvements with new sinks and vanities plus cabinets in all the rooms.

Bussey Hall has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013.

Dr. Donna Allen, vice president for student affairs said in a press release;

“The improvements allowed from this grant will return Bussey Hall to the elegant state she once was. We are very grateful to have been given this opportunity for our students.”

Bussey Hall is named after Jesse and Carol Bussey who were dining hall directors from 1913 to 1956. The hall opened back in the spring of 1951. The all-female dormitory has a computer lab and even small cooking areas for the students.

Restoring some of the buildings on campus is a priority for the university to keep these historic buildings around for more students throughout the years to enjoy.
