Have You Received a Call From Jamaica Lately?
Scams. I hate scams. There is a phone scam that I've heard about, but never in a thousand years did I think I'd be targeted. Luckily, I didn't fall for it and I'm writing this in hopes that you won't either.
Usually, I'm not one to answer my cell phone if the caller isn't in my contact's list. I figure if it's important then they'll leave a message.
Last weekend I received a call and only the number showed up. I didn't know who it was from and so I didn't answer it. Later, I went back and took a closer look. The caller left no voicemail, but in my recent calls it showed it was from Jamaica.
Well, I love Jamaica, but I don't know anyone who actually lives there. I Googled the area code and discovered a lot of information about it. I found out that if I had actually answered the call, it's possible the scammer would have told me that I had won the Jamaican Lottery or a car ,and I would just need to pay a few thousand dollars in taxes and fees to get my prize. Scam.
And part of the scam is they attempt is to even get you to send the "fee" using a prepaid card.
If you do receive a call like this, please do not answer it in the first place or at least hang up immediately. Then report the call to your cell phone provider or the police.
This particular scam has taken advantage of a lot elderly people in other states as the video below describes.
