The only major connection between the new film version of Flatliners and the 1990 original is Kiefer Sutherland, who was one of the two leads of the first film along with Julia Roberts. But so far, Sutherland and his character have been absent from the film’s marketing, which has focused instead on Ellen Page and the new group of ambitious medical students who believe they can make a major scientific breakthrough by killing themselves and then bringing each other back to life. What could possibly go wrong with that plan?

Well, here Kiefer is, finally, in this new Flatliners teaser. But briefly. I mean, really briefly. He doesn’t say anything. Hell, he might not be onscreen for a full second. But he’s there! He’s in the movie! What he’s doing in it, or how much he will be in it, we still don’t know. Here’s the film’s official (but Kiefer-less) synopsis:

In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.

Flatliners opens in theaters on September 29. Presumably with more than just this one single shot of Kiefer Sutherland in it (although it would be kind of amazing if he literally appeared in one shot and no one ever discussed it or noticed him).
