BREAKING NEWS: Bowie County Deputy Killed

A Bowie County inmate shot and killed a female deputy as he was being transported to the county courthouse.

The inmate, identified as Tucker Strickland, then fled from the courthouse in the county's prison van. He was recaptured about 30 minutes later by authorities in Ashdown, AR.

The sheriff's office says Strickland was in Rusk County and had just returned to Bowie County for a court hearing.

The sheriff says the female deputy and Strickland arrived in the basement garage of the county courthouse in New Boston about 2:30 pm. While they were in the basement, the sheriff says Strickland overpowered the deputy and shot her.

The sheriff's office has not released the name of the deputy who was shot.

A Bowie County Sheriff's Deputy was shot and killed outside of the Bowie County Courthouse in New Boston Texas this afternoon by an inmate who then stole a van used to transport prisoners, according to Officials.

The van has been recovered in Ashdown Arkansas.

No information was released on how the inmate got the gun...
