1776 - The Continental Congress adopted the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.

1802 - The UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY officially opened at West Point, New York.

1826 - JOHN ADAMS... (who was our 2nd President)... and THOMAS JEFFERSON... (who was our 3rd President)... died within hours of each other on the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

(John Adams' dying words were, "Jefferson still survives."  He didn't know that Jefferson had died a few hours earlier.)

1831 - The 5th President of the United States, JAMES MONROE, died in New York City... exactly five years after John Adams and Thomas Jefferson's deaths.

1872 - The 30th president of the United States, CALVIN COOLIDGE, was born in Vermont.

1939 - LOU GEHRIG said farewell to his fans at Yankee Stadium with the words, "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

1959 - America's 49-STAR FLAG, honoring ALASKAN STATEHOOD, was officially unfurled.

1960 - America's 50-STAR FLAG, honoring HAWAIIAN STATEHOOD, was officially unfurled.

1982 - OZZY OSBOURNE married saucy minx SHARON ARDEN.  Today is their 29th Anniversary.

1990 - "DIE HARD 2" was released!

1995 - EVA GABOR (Lisa Douglas on "Green Acres") died in L.A. at the age of 74.
