Time Capsule to be Unearthed for Texarkana Sesquicentennial Event
There's a huge festival going on in historic downtown Texarkana this weekend hosted by the TXK 150 Committee. The celebration is the Texarkana Sesquicentennial 150th Anniversary.
Not only will you learn about Texarkana's history over the past 150 years but the most anticipated event is the unearthing of a time capsule that was buried in the ground 50 years ago. The Texarkana, Texas Public Works Department, Parks Department, and East Funeral Home are prepping and preparing for the digging up of the time capsule to be opened.
I'm personally excited because if I remember correctly, some people were asked to bring something to put in the capsule. My parents put a Texarkana Gazette newspaper clipping with the date inside the capsule with a special note to me and my brother. I'm curious to see if it survived the burial after all these years.
This is going to really feel like a time portal into Texarkana's past. It's too bad Doc from Back to the Future won't be around to see this.
Friday, April 14 Time Capsule Opening
The capsule will be opened for the first time in 50 years on Friday, April 14, at 5:30 PM at Sheppard Park on the west side of the U.S. Post Office. Following the opening, the contents of the capsule will be inventoried by the TXK150 Committee. The committee will work to return any items that were intended for relatives and loved ones, and many of the remaining items will be on display at the Museum of Regional History at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, prior to the Sesquicentennial Twice as Nice Festival.
