Texarkana is playing host to a large group of Kiwanis Club members.

The City of Texarkana, Texas and the Texarkana, Texas Convention Center and Hilton Garden Inn will welcome 400 members of the Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis Convention beginning today, Thursday, August 6th and continuing through Sunday.

Members of the local Texarkana Kiwanis Club, along with Convention Center manager Jennifer Montoya, have been working hard to prepare for the arrival of Kiwanis Club members from all over Texas and Oklahoma. While in Texarkana, members will elect a new governor, attend educational forums, and participate in many luncheons and banquets at the Convention Center. Texarkana competed to host this year’s convention, beating out the cities of Corpus Christi, and Allen, Texas, as well as Ardmore, Okla.

According to District Convention Chairman, Keith Burns, this is a monumental event for the local Texarkana club.

“For the 92 year old Kiwanis Club of Texarkana, this is the single most important function in our service history,” Burns said. “At this year’s convention in Texarkana, we will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Kiwanis, the culmination of our World Wide Fund raiser, the Eliminate Project, which eliminates Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus from the face the of the earth and for the first time ever we will host a Kiwanis International President, Dr. John Button. We are very pleased all of this will take place in our town, with this club as the host.”

The City of Texarkana, Texas has worked with the convention center and other area hotels to ensure Texarkana will be prepared to host the event. Hospitality buttons have been passed out to host hotels, local restaurants and retailers greeting convention-goers, general clean up has taken place near the site, and both Texarkana mayors will welcome participants at the convention’s opening session on Friday.
