Texarkana Reacts to the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shootings
Although Connecticut may seem far removed from Texarkana, the world at large is mourning the deaths of 27 individuals, including 18 children, after 24-year-old shooter Ryan Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. this morning and changed this quiet bedroom community forever. Among those found dead was Lanza's own mother, a kindergarten teacher at the school. As many media personalities have noted, this is now "the worst shooting of its kind ever," as the number of fatalities is even higher than those shot at Columbine in 1999. What do you think about this latest atrocity Texarkana?
One Texarkana resident, Shelby Raney, says, "I am 15 minutes away from where the school shooting was today in Connecticut. Everyone here is crying for those 18 children and the rest of the staff that were killed. We know who the ruler of this world is. It's so sad."
Jeff Tarpley, who runs a dog rescue in Texarkana, says, "My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved."
"My heart and prayers go out to the families in Connecticut," says Sabrina Hill, a former Texarkana resident now living in Dallas. "No words can express how I feel right now. Anybody that knows me knows how I feel about our children, elderly and disabled people. There is no excuse in the world for some of the actions from people in this world today."
Melodie Capps Garcia says it is a sad day. "[I'm] turning the news off and just praying for peace and those innocent little babies. Dear Lord, please fix those that are broken."
