CHRISTUS St. Michael is providing unique job shadowing opportunities for students in the AHS Future Health Professionals Club.

Students experience what it is like to work in the health care field alongside extraordinary staff members. “Job shadowing introduces students to various career fields and helps them decide which jobs fit their interests,” commented Club Sponsor Christy Waid. After the program application process, participants are assigned to an experienced professional in a specific area of interest. Students observe the skills and responsibilities needed while performing in a patient care environment. “We appreciate St. Michael for the opportunity they are providing to our students.”

All third through sixth grade students will participate in the 2018 Arkansas Reads One Book initiative Economics Arkansas is a lead partner in this family financial literacy project that involves students, their families, and the community. As part of the initiative, each student will receive his or her very own copy of Cleo Edison Oliver, Playground Millionaire by Sundee T. Frazier. In addition to reading the book, students will participate in lesson plans, student activities, and family reading guides. A very special thank you to our business partners, Farmers Bank & Trust, for donating $3,000 to purchase books for every third and fourth grade student. TASD Montage Project funds support books for all of the fifth and sixth graders.

Over 200 AHS students participated in the National School Walkout. During the 17-minutes, AHS students stood silently and held hands as a sign of solidarity against gun violence in schools. After the event, senior Christina Cannady encouraged her fellow classmates to continue to honor the Parkland victims, to love one another, and work together to create change. “I cannot imagine something so tragic happening at my school, but we must all do our part and work to embrace everyone within our school community.” Across the nation, students participated in the event to protest the lack of action from lawmakers in the wake of the February 14 shooting that killed fourteen students and three staff members at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.
