What’s It Like Working The Booth With ‘The Mandalorian’? Geek’d Con 2023
Geek'd Con 2023 wrapped up over a week ago and I'm finally getting to tell you about my experience working the booth THE Mandalorian. Not the voice you hear on the TV show, I'm talking about one of the guys wearing the suit and doing the acting. His name is Barry Lowin.
Geek'd Con 2023 was a hoot as always, the event is growing in size a popularity every year and I'm pretty sure this year was a huge success. Since I work for the same company that brings you this Geek'd event every year (just in a different market), and my wife and I regularly attend Cons, it should be no surprise that I volunteer my time each year to help man a booth, take tickets, answer questions, whatever they need me to do. This year I spent my Saturday in Shreveport helping Barry Lowin in his booth on the main floor. If you had your picture taken with him or had him autograph something for you on Saturday, it was probably me collecting your money or snapping the photo.
Barry stayed pretty busy with autographs and pics for most of the day but we had time to talk a bit during the lulls and trust me when I say Barry was as nice as he could be. I know what you're thinking. Did Jim learn any insider information about season 4 of The Mandalorian? Or any dirt tidbits that he could share about the cast of the show?
Nope!
One of the things I did learn was it takes four people to play Din Djarin in the series, two actors, Barry Lowin and Brendan Wayne, one stunt guy named Lateef Crowder, and the character is voiced of course by Pedro Pascal. Pedro only has to show up for the camera when Mando takes off his helmet, which is rare.
This is not an unusual practice as many characters in the Star Wars universe are voiced by someone else, the most famous of course being James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader.
Barry's booth was situated between two other actors who have had their own success in Star Wars TV shows and movies;
To our left was actor, director, and stunt guy Dorian Kingi, he recently played Cad Bane, the gunslinger character in the "Book of Boba Fett" series on Disney Plus.
Dorian is over 6'5" by the way, I'm just 6'3" and don't normally have to look up to people, he was the exception to that rule. Also a really nice guy.
Chris Bartlett was on the other side of us, Chris has played C-3PO in the Star Wars franchise for a number of years now and seems to be a real fan as well. There were many times during the day that he went out to take pictures with Cosplayers in well-done Star Wars costumes.
The really cool thing about all three of these guys was how much time they were able to spend with each fan they met. Took pictures, signed stuff, answered questions, and genuinely seemed to enjoy themselves with the folks.
