
From Fire to Blade – James Black School Opens 2026 Bladesmithing Classes
How would you like to learn the art of bladesmithing? The James Black School of Bladesmithing and Historic Trades at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana is now accepting registration for spring through fall 2026 classes.
Located at Historic Washington State Park in Arkansas, the school offers hands-on instruction rooted in the traditions of American bladesmithing and honors the legacy of James Black, the bladesmith associated with the original Bowie Knife.
Hands-On Training for All Skill Levels at James Black School of Bladesmithing
These non-credit community courses are open to both beginners and experienced makers. The classes provide practical instruction in forging, knife making, and traditional metalworking. The courses are each led by nationally recognized bladesmiths and focus on real-world skills taught in a historic, working shop environment.
Jennifer Teresa, dean of technical and industrial programs at U of A Hope-Texarkana, said in a press release,
We’re proud to offer classes that celebrate both the craft and the history of bladesmithing. From foundational blacksmithing skills to advanced Damascus techniques, there’s something for everyone.

Introduction to Blacksmithing - March 14–15
Hunting Knife - April 20–23
Bowie Knife - May 4–8
Axe Making - May 23–24
Blacksmithing - June 20–21
Knife Kit - July 11–12
Advanced Transitional Damascus - September 14–18
X-Rhea Knife - October 22–24
Open Lab - October 26–30
Veteran Course - November 2–6 (scholarships available).

Course costs range from $350 to $850.
