If you have ever cared for a loved one suffering from dementia, then you know how difficult it is. Not only are you trying to come to terms with this heartbreaking disease, but being a caregiver is a 24-hour 7 days a week job. You need a break and believe it or not there is some help coming your way.

The Alzheimer’s Alliance Tri-State Area, a nonprofit based in Texarkana, just scored a national grant from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) to help local families dealing with dementia by offering respite care.

For those caring for a loved one with dementia, respite care is a game-changer. It gives caregivers a desperately needed break and also provides social interaction and cognitive activities for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Studies show that with this type of care, it improves the quality of life for both the individual and the caregiver and family.

Their program, Our Place Day Respite Center, gives caregivers a chance to unwind and defrag while their loved ones spend time in a safe, supportive environment. The participants are able to socialize, engage in activities suited to their needs, and ,meet with others with in a similar situation. Thanks to the $6,000 grant from AFA’s Milton & Phyllis Berg Respite Grant program, more families in our area who couldn’t otherwise afford it will now have access to these services.

Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and CEO said in a press release that this care gives the caregiver a mental break and gives them a chance to do something for themselves. Doing this helps the caregiver emotionally and physically and in turn gives them both a better quality of life.
