I live out in the woods of Deep East Texas, and I've heard my fair share of critters.

East Texas Sounds of the Night

During the summer, the high-pitched whines of cicadas are a frequent sound during the day. Then at night, the rhythmic chant of frogs and crickets near our pond can provide a relaxing concert.

Every once in a while, I'll hear the spooky howls of a pack of nearby coyotes echoing through the nearby forest.

What About This Sound...?

Recently, I saw this post on Facebook by IdkSterling giving an example of a sound that will chill most to the bone. (I suggest you don't play this with your pets around, my dogs went nuts!)

Yeah, I believe the policeman at the end of the video had the right idea...walk in the other direction. Whether you call it a mountain lion, cougar, panther, or puma, you do not want to confront it.

Have You Ever Heard That Sound?

Thankfully, I've never heard that sound in real life. My brother-in-law who lives in northeast Texas near the Sabine River has heard that sound a couple of times while on his back porch. Needless to say, he did not go investigate.

The sounds in the video above are the most shrill and scary out of all the examples I could find. Here are two more examples of screaming cougars.

A Few Mountain Lion Facts

In Texas, mountain lions are mostly found out west, in the Hill Country region, or in the southern part of the state. However, every so often there are sightings in other parts of the state including east Texas.

White-tail deer are a common meal for the mountain lion, although they are known to kill other animals, both wild and domestic.

So, if you hear that piercing sound, find a place of safety...and make sure your pets are safe as well.
