I know a bunch of people around the Ark-La-Tex who make the trek down to the gulf coast every summer for vacation, they just love the beach. Question; is your beach in Mississippi? Was it closed last week?

Reports last week and into the weekend popped up about toxic algae that made all the beaches in Mississippi un-swimmable. In fact, you couldn't even eat any fish caught in that area due to that algae outbreak.

According to a report in USA Today, the last two state beaches that were still open for swimming had to be closed this past Sunday. People were still allowed on the beaches, but swimming was not allowed. So, if you wanted to go sunbath, play frisbee, hang out with your friends, cookout, etc, all of that is fine. Swimming, letting your pets in the water, eating anything from the water was a big no, no.

Good News:

It appears that all of the swimming restrictions have been lifted at the time of this writing.

According to that same article, it's actually not algae but something called cyanobacteria, and exposure can lead to rashes, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Hopefully not all at the same time.

There was apparently a concern of this bacteria continuing to move eastward as well, although I can tell you that the beaches in Alabama are open right now. So, if you have made vacation plans on the gulf coast between Mississippi and the Florida panhandle you better make sure your beach is open.

Finding the information you need on this subject is not easy but I think this is all you need, it's the website for MS Department that monitors the conditions. It looks like everything is open right now. Fingers crossed that it stays that-a-way, for the economy's sake and your vacay.
