It turns out that an axle can be a pretty good stopping device.

Here is some video footage of brake tests of a 15 ton MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protection) Force Vehicle.  They get it up to 60 mph, and lock down the brakes. The first pass was successful, but take a look at the second attempt...
