According to the Press Release, younger generations-especially Gen Z, are more likely to report having poor mental health than their older counterparts. Experts are unsure why this is the case. However, they agree that it needs to be addressed. Developmental trauma is particularly problematic. If left unaddressed, it can result in ADHD, PTSD, and other psychological diseases. It can also have a serious impact on a child's ability to learn and the overall classroom experience. In many cases, teachers are the first line of defense in combating mental illness.

Orli Avi-Yonah is a clinical psychologist and social worker. She has supervised, taught, lectured and consulted at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, Law School and Medical School.
