Celia Cruz is the subject of the Google Doodle today. Although I enjoy all types of music, I didn't recognize the name Celia Cruz. She was born in Havana, Cuba, as the second of four children. As a teenager, her aunt and other relatives took her to cabarets to sing.

However, her father wanted her to become a Spanish teacher. Once her teacher mentioned she could make in a day singing what a teacher makes in a month, Celia's decision to become a singer was born.

She started in radio then a Cuban orchestra which traveled throughout Latin America. After much political unrest in Cuba, she and her husband stayed in the United States and brought a rich heritage to other performers as well as her listeners. Celia Cruz died at the age of 77 from a brain tumor.
