October is known as a beer-drinking month due to the fact there are so many Octoberfest celebrations going on across the country. But did you know that there is an abbey in Arkansas where Benedictine monks make their own beer?
The historic Subiaco Abbey is home to Country Monks Brewing, where monks serve up some tasty beers, monk sauce, and something called Abbey Brittle along with other merchandise for purchase.

The monastery was founded over 100 years ago and began privately brewing its own beer in the early 1920s. In 2017, Country Monks Brewing was founded by Brother Sabastian who went from teaching to brewing.

Most recently, Brother Sebastian traveled to Alabama to deliver beer for a reunion and to his parents who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. He had a special beer made just for them named Wedding Wheat using an old wedding photo that included the iconic fat monk.

Brewery Hours

The brewery is open on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at last report. Country Monks Brewing is one of three breweries located in the area.
I know it sounds rather strange for religious Benedictine monks to be selling beer from a monastery but people travel from all over the country to this beautiful mountainside abbey in northern Arkansas.

While I haven't been to the brewery yet, I have been to the monastery, the drive is absolutely beautiful taking you through lots of rolling hills, countryside, and mountain valleys. I encourage when you get to the abbey take the time to sit on the grass overlooking the river valley below and you will get a sense of peace just being there. If you are lucky you just might hear the world-renowned mystifying Gregorian monk chant.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
