ACLU Gets Father-Daughter Dances Banned in Rhode Island School
Litigation from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has successfully targeted a tradition in a Rhode Island school district: from now on, all father-daugher and mother-son activities in Cranston schools have been banned.
According to the Providence Journal, the suit and the resulting ban was triggered by a complaint from a single single mother, who felt the family-based events were discriminatory.
The Journal reports federal laws banning gender discrimination makes exemptions for "father-son" and "mother-daughter" events, but Rhode Island law doesn't. The decision, reached some time ago, but only recently brought to light by a Republican running for State senate has parents fuming, and flooding Cranston officials with phone calls.
