There’s sad news to report as Gwenda Evans, the mother of U2 guitarist The Edge, has passed away. She died Monday (June 11) after a short illness. The guitarist was said to be surrounded by his family and bandmate Bono.

The Irish Independent reports that Bono and his wife Ali Hewson met The Edge at Dublin’s Dylan Hotel, where the grieving musician was spotted entering with a Bible. It’s believed that he was planning on selecting scriptures to be read during his mother’s service, which is expected to take place later this week.

A U2 spokesperson told the paper that Gwenda Evans’ funeral would be “an entirely private affair.”

Mrs. Evans was born in Wales and moved with her husband Garvin to Ireland in the ’60s. When Garvin was transferred from London to run a Dublin factory, Gwenda enjoyed a career as a primary school teacher. Along with her son David (aka The Edge), the couple had a son Richard and a daughter Jill.
