Some area high schools have won money for Project Graduation from the Texas Department of Transportation.

Pay Attention East Texas (PAET), a regional traffic safety coalition group, sponsored a public service announcement contest in April to give area high schools an opportunity to win funds for their Project Graduation.

The top three winners from previously sponsored PSA contests held in the Atlanta, Lufkin and Tyler Districts of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) were entered in the contest. The videos were created by students for educate their peers on a variety of traffic safety issues including: seat belt usage, distracted driving, speeding, etc. They were judged by PAET members on their message, quality, and uniqueness.

Winners of the competition were Redwater High School in Bowie County, which was awarded $1,000, Douglass High in School in Nacogdoches County was awarded $700, and Union Grove High School in Upshur County was awarded $400. Other schools participating in the event included: Hudson, Martin Mills, Texas High, Slocum, Martinsville and Eustace.

The money will be used at each school to sponsor an alcohol-free and drug-free celebration activity for graduates at their school this year. It's an opportunity to show area high school students that there are plenty of lawful ways to have fun and enjoy the graduation experience without the illegal use of alcohol.

Pay Attention East Texas partners with TxDOT and many other public and private agencies in a 35-county area of Northeast Texas to educate the public in traffic safety issues.
