(KMDL-FM) If you are a pet owner in Louisiana, we have important recall information for you from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. A popular pet toy, sold at pet stores nationwide and online, could pose a potential health risk.

We're not sure if this is good news or bad news, but the risk of using the product is actually lower for your pet than for you. To be even more accurate, the risk is higher for children and toddlers than for adults.

Details of Danger Associated with Recalled Product Revealed by CPSC
The problem the Consumer Product Safety Commission is concerned about is a deadly ingestion hazard. Again, not so much from your pet, although that could be possible, but it's more of a concern that your small child could ingest a portion of the toy, and that could lead to a choking issue or, the ingestion could cause internal injuries and chemical burns.
If I were to make an assumption on which Louisiana households are most likely to have purchased this recalled pet toy, I would assume that most of the people who have purchased the recalled toy are cat owners.

The reason I would make that assumption is that the recalled product is the one that is pictured below.
As you can see, it's a Pet Laser Toy, and I think we've all been very amused by videos of cats chasing laser pointer lights in various circumstances through the years. Again, the problem with the laser pointer toy is not as much about your pet as it is about your children.
Cat Owners Stop Using This Toy Immediately
The CPSC advisory for the recall of the product suggests:
the battery compartment is not secure, making the button cell batteries easily accessible to children, posing a deadly ingestion hazard. In addition, the button batteries provided with the pet toys are not in child-resistant packaging, and the packaging does not have the warnings
As we've alluded to already, the ingestion of the button-style battery in the toy could also lead to serious internal injuries and chemical burns. So, while this might seem like a lighthearted recall because of the nature of the toy, it's very serious indeed.
Consumers who have the product are requested to discontinue use immediately. It's estimated that about 51,000 or more of these products have been sold.
