End of an Era: Long Time Texarkana Grocery Store Closing
Save-a-Lot at 6 East Street in College Hill is closing its grocery store in early October. The Texarkana, Arkansas, grocery store has been a staple in the neighborhood since the late 1900s.
Why Save-A-Lot Stores Are Closing Across the Country
Franchisee Kenya Grocery announced the closing as part of a transitional period, operating as a traditional grocery chain for years, to a 100% wholesale and license model, providing products to independent licensees.
According to Wikipedia, many Save-a-Lot stores have struggled with profitability, increased theft, increased competition from other discount grocery chains, changing customer needs, and some legal issues.
Clearance Prices Are Now Underway at Save-a-Lot in College Hill
The College Hill Save-a-Lot store has already begun clearing its shelves with incredible savings of up to 50% off. The store was convenient for people living in that neighborhood, but with the store closing soon, the south side of Texarkana will be without a grocery store.
Having already lost another grocery store, a pharmacy, and a pizza restaurant, there's not much left in the neighborhood.
Do you remember what was originally in the Save-a-Lot building many years ago?
