The Muses Return to Texarkana with ‘Broken Standards’ Opera Cabaret

Texarkana is in for an evening of music that takes a few unexpected turns when The Muses Classical Troupe returns to the Regional Arts Center for its fall Opera Cabaret, “Broken Standards.”

The performance is set for Thursday, September 10, from 7 to 8:30 PM and is being presented by the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council (TRAHC).

From Handel to Gershwin, And A Few Surprises Along The Way

“Broken Standards” brings together two very different musical worlds: the dramatic sounds of early Western European opera and classical music with the unmistakable style of early 20th-century American jazz.

The 30-person cast includes a mixed choral ensemble, eight internationally touring professional soloists, resident vocalists and dancers.

The program will feature works by Handel, Purcell and Bach, including selections from early opera, art song, oratorio and sacred music. Then the evening takes a turn toward American jazz and big-band favorites from composers including Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Kurt Weill.

The result is a musical mashup that shows just how much these different traditions can have in common, especially when it comes to powerful voices, big emotions and memorable melodies.

A Fresh Take on the Classics

The Muses are known for presenting classical music in ways that are entertaining, accessible and a little outside the expected. “Broken Standards” continues that approach by bringing familiar musical traditions together in a performance designed to both inspire and entertain.
