Motorcyclist Killed Following Crash Involving Fleeing Driver in Texarkana

A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle whose driver allegedly fled from a Texarkana Arkansas Police officer moments earlier.

According to a press release from the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department, an officer was patrolling near North State Line Avenue and Texas Boulevard around 9:30 PM on September 2 when he noticed a man appearing to be unconscious behind the wheel of a vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly still in drive, with the driver's foot on the brake.

As the officer tried to make contact and have the driver place the vehicle in park, the man suddenly woke up and accelerated away.

Police said the vehicle traveled through the CVS parking lot before heading north on State Line Avenue. Near the intersection of Realtor Avenue and North State Line Avenue, the vehicle collided with a motorcycle.

Sadly, the impact caused fatal injuries to the motorcyclist. Officers and members of the Texarkana Arkansas Fire Department attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's identity has not yet been released. Please keep the victim's family in your prayers.

Following the collision, the suspect vehicle continued north before crashing near St. Michael Drive and catching fire. Authorities say the driver fled the scene before officers arrived.

The Arkansas State Police is investigating the fatal crash and also working to obtain warrants for the suspected driver. TAPD's Criminal Investigation Division is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
