Most older Americans can feel a little overwhelmed with all the AI getting thrown at them these days. 2025 was the year that AI, which stands for Artificial Intelligence, started popping up everywhere. For some in the Natural State, getting it shoved in their faces is more than a little intimidating; for others, it's downright infuriating.

I'm not going to pretend to be some kind of AI Guru. I'm learning this stuff too, but I might be just enough ahead of most reading this that maybe I can help my Arkansas friends get started with an easy-to-do, everyday kind of path to incorporate a little AI, or digital assistant, in your everyday life.

Basic AI Use 101

If you have typed a question into Google in the last year or so, congratulations, you are already using AI. Google AI, or Gemini, is now giving you the answers at the top of the page before it shows you any actual articles or websites to visit to obtain the answers yourself. So, even though you think you're using a search engine, you're actually getting the answers from a chatbot.

So, here are 5 of the easiest ways to start using AI in your everyday life in 2026:

1. The "What’s for Dinner?" Solver
Instead of staring at a random assortment of ingredients in your fridge, list them for an AI (like Gemini or ChatGPT) and ask for a recipe. It’s the ultimate way to reduce food waste and stop the "I don't know what to cook" stress.

2. Your Personal "First Draft" Assistant
Whether it’s a tricky email to a boss, a "thank you" note, or even a polite way to decline an invitation, let AI write the first version. You can just say, "Help me write a nice email declining a party invite because I’m tired," and then just tweak it to sound more like you.

3. The Insta-Planner
Planning a weekend trip or a busy day? Tell Digital Assistant where you wanna go or your list of errands and ask it to "create an efficient itinerary." It can group your stops by location or suggest the best times to visit local spots to avoid crowds. For real, it can do that!

4. Explaining the Complex
If you run across a news story, a medical term, or even a homework question that makes no sense, open up your AI and ask it to: "Explain this to me like I’m five." It’s like having a universal translator for jargon and complex topics right in your pocket. It works too; I do it a lot more than I would like to admit.

5. Summarizing a "Too Long; Didn't Read" Item
Got a long article or a 20-minute video you don't have time for? Believe it or not, AI can read it or watch the video for you. Paste the link or the text into an AI and ask for the "top 3 takeaways." It’s a massive time-saver for staying informed without the information overload.

One Thing My Arkansas Friends...

AI is here to stay, so working within its parameters and learning what it can do are pretty important. You can either learn how to deal with it or try your best to ignore it, but most likely, it's already a big part of your life, whether you know it or not.

What To Watch Out For

Occasionally, AI lies! Sometimes, it will just make stuff up, it seems to happen when it has a hard time finding an answer to a question. Take answers and suggestions with a grain of salt and make sure what it says makes sense before you go out preaching it as gospel. But it is getting better.

The millions of uses for AI are just beginning. Hopefully, it will improve the lives of all humans. One thing is for sure: Skynet hasn't become self-aware... yet. We hope. But, if some big expressionless guy comes up to you and asks for your motorcycle, clothes, and such... You might consider just saying, yes.

Barring a Terminator experience, these are just a few ways you can ease yourself into starting with AI this year.

FYI: Use the free versions, you and I are not ready for the paid-for services yet. Start slow, and have fun with it.
