Like many folks in Texas, I was glued to all of the coverage of Hurricane Milton as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico heading straight to Florida. The category 3 storm slammed into the Sunshine State leaving heartbreaking destruction and death.

At least 16 people have died from Hurricane Milton which made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida and that number is sadly expected to rise. As of this writing, nearly 2.5 million people are without power as families, rescuers, and first responders continue to assess the damage that this massive hurricane caused.

People who evacuated are returning to their homes again as this is the second hurricane to hit Florida in two weeks. Many of those people are returning to a path of destruction that saw boats hurled into homes, signs toppled, buildings destroyed, and water damage - some returning to nothing at all.

Hurricane Milton Slams Into Florida

I can't imagine what the people of Florida had to go through and will be going through in the future as damage is assessed and folks try to get back to a normal life. I know the anxiety I felt when I went to South Padre Island recently when a hurricane was churning in the Gulf of Mexico and rolling towards us, only to track more north.

My thoughts go out to those affected by this massive hurricane.

As cleanup continues in Florida, folks in Texas are preparing to help. Organizations like Red Cross, and Global Samaritan Resouces here in Abilene are helping in a variety of ways as cleanup from Hurricane Milton continues.
