This time of year we don't see many snakes because of the heat, but we all know they are lying in wait to come out and scare the crap out of us when we least expect. Did you know that snakes are illegal to kill in Arkansas?
I have been around snakes my whole life and some we know are good for you to keep around the house because of the animals they eat. Most folks would disagree with that in the fact that all snakes are bad and need to be dead, but there is something I found on snakesforpets.com that may surprise you.
It is illegal to kill a snake in the state of Arkansas. Here is the exact wording on it being illegal to kill these snakes.
All native snakes, including venomous snakes, are protected by law and are illegal to kill unless they ‘pose reasonable threat or endangerment to persons or property’ on your private property, according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife code.
Now if the snake is a danger to you or your property then you are allowed to kill the snake. There is a story about a gentleman that killed a rattlesnake that was attacking his dog. This rattlesnake was huge, much larger than the 4 to 5-foot long average size.
So the next time you are out in your yard and see a snake make sure that snake is a threat before you try to kill it. No matter what kind of snake it is unless it is threatening you you cannot touch it.
