Now that pot is legal for retail sales in Colorado, tourism numbers are getting "higher", and it is causing some confusion for the TSA at Colorado airports.

The most important thing to consider is that Pot is not allowed on an airplane... period. That's a federal law, and that supersedes local laws. Once you are past the security checkpoint you are under federal law. Some folks don't know these rules, or don't care, or maybe they are stoned. Last week in Aspen, TSA agents confiscated some edible goodies from a passenger's checked baggage. The TSA turned the incident over to the local authorities and they decided to take no actions against the passenger as the edibles contained less than one ounce of marijuana, which is within the legal guidelines for personal use.

Passengers in Colorado should remember, NO WEED ON PLANES, but they shouldn't be terrified of the TSA, even though they carry guns and from my experience rarely smile, the TSA is NOT a law enforcement agency. They will turn the case over to the local authorities and they will more than likely let you go if you are within the legal amounts to have in your possession.

TSA Spokesman Ross Feinstein told the Daily Traveler,

TSA’s focus is on terrorism and security threats to the aircraft and its passengers. As has always been the case, if during the security screening procedures an officer discovers an item that may violate the law, TSA refers the matter to law enforcement, it’s up to local law enforcement officials to decide whether to prosecute.

If you would like to double check before you travel, see TSA's Policy for Medical Marijuana for a little more clarity.

They are also having some issues regarding drugs and flying over in Spain, but they are taking a bit of a different approach... check out their Guide for Fliers.
