Occupy Texarkana will be holding a demonstration on Friday, January 20 from 12PM to 5PM at the Downtown Post Office and Federal Courthouse located at 500 North State Line Ave.

A representative of Occupy Texarkana forwarded this information to us:

This demonstration is in response to a call to action from Move to Amend and inspired by Occupy Wall Street to Occupy the Federal Courts in an effort to end corporate personhood. This demonstration will be a one day occupation and is set to coincide with the second anniversary of the Citizen’s United v. Federal Election Commission Supreme Court decision. The General Assembly of Occupy Texarkana joins in issuing this call and invites all who support the movement to participate throughout the day.

Over 80 courthouses, including the Supreme Court, will be the focus of Occupy protesters across the country on Friday, one day before the second anniversary of the Citizens United v. F.E.C. decision, in which the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run the government.

When you think of all of the nasty confrontations we have seen on the news during the occupy movements rest assured, there will be plenty of security for this event. There will be at least two marked vehicles at the event provided by Homeland Security. There are probably others that are unmarked as well. When questioned about the coverage at these smaller events, the officer at the last Occupy event alluded to additional coverage that was in the background.

If you have ever wondered what the purpose of Occupy Texarkana or any other Occupy is about, here is more information that was provided to us by the organizers of this event:

Despite having not even been mentioned in either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States, corporations have over the last few decades been granted by corrupt Justices privileges that empower them to deny citizens the right to full self-governance. They have used these rights to wield ever-increasing control over jobs, natural assets, and the very legal system that is supposed to protect the citizens, not the corporations.

We believe corporations are not persons and possess only the privileges citizens and their elected representatives willfully grant them. Organizers of OCCUPY THE COURTS propose a Constitutional Amendment that will overturn the Court-created legal doctrines of corporate personhood and “Money Equals Speech.”

Occupy Texarkana is committed to a peaceful demonstration and preemptively disavows any attempt to subjugate the message with violence or other inappropriate or illegal action. Proper permits have been obtained from the Federal Government.
