Dave and Judy Phillips, of Emmett, Arkansas, recently established the Ace Electric Endowed Scholarship at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana. The scholarship is given in memory of Dave’s parents, Joe A. and Willie Ruth Phillips.

According to a press release, Mr. Joe Phillips was a Master Electrician and the owner of the Ace Electric Company in Alexandria, Louisiana, for over 50 years. Mrs. Willie Ruth Phillips served as the book keeper, record keeper, and tax preparer for the company. The Ace Electric Company served the residential, commercial, and light industrial markets in the central Louisiana area.

“Mom and Dad were strong supporters of education, primarily technical, industrial, and higher education,” said Dave Phillips, longtime Director of Telecommunications at UAHT. “We designed this scholarship to help students seeking technical or business related degrees and certificates. Preference is given to non-traditional students retraining or returning to the workforce, who have a demonstrated financial need.”

“To make this endowment possible, we used savings and a pay as you go concept,” said Phillips.  “We created a savings account with an automatic draft set to pay into the account, that way money was set aside on payday automatically. As the account built up over time, we used some of the savings to fund an annual scholarship each year. The annual scholarship amount was less than what we were saving over the course of the year, that way the savings account kept building up over a number of years until we could permanently endow the scholarship.”

“It is the dedicated efforts of people like Dave and Judy who make it possible for so many others to achieve their educational dreams,” said Jill Bobo, Executive Director of the UAHT Foundation. “This is the second endowment they’ve established through their diligence of putting back a little into savings each month. Over time, their efforts of putting back a little have paid off big in helping students afford their education.”
