The new Black Mass trailer pulls the focus back from Johnny Depp’s performance as the notorious gangster Whitey Bulger, showcasing an ensemble of actors that has to be seen to be believed. And like any movie set in Boston, each and every actor wield their accents like bricks. This isn’t a Boston movie – it’s a Baahstin movie and everyone in the cast is seemingly trying to one-up the others when it comes to dropping their R’s.

While the previous trailer was all mood and evocative images, this preview actually delves into what Scott Cooper’s movie is actually about. Depp plays Bulger, a low-level crook whose alliance with a few friends in high places allows his criminal empire to flourish as the officials tun a blind eye. You can turn to Wikipedia if you want to know the full details of the Bulger case, but this is very much a modern story that hasn’t reached a definitive ending. Exactly when and where Cooper decides to end this story is going to be very interesting.

Although Depp’s snarling, dead-eyed performance appears to be the centerpiece of the film (and maaaybe his redemption for the past decade?), he’s backed up by Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple, Adam Scott, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jesse Plemons. Even if Depp pulls a Depp and drops the ball, Black Mass needs to be seen for that cast, right?

Black Mass opens on September 18, 2015.
