Let’s be honest here: you probably spend more time browsing your options on Netflix Instant than you do actually watching anything. And now to add to your ongoing decision-making dilemma, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos has announced that the service plans to start launching 20 (twenty!) new original series a year. Now you’ll never run out of options for weekend binge-watching.
We won’t know exactly how graphic ‘50 Shades of Grey’ is going to be until we see the film with our own cursed eyeballs, but we now officially know that the film has been given an R-rating by the pearl-clutching members of the MPAA. What does that R-rating stand for? Graphic nudity, “strong sexual content,” and “unusual behavior.” Wait, what the hell is unusual behavior?!
Yesterday, the clever people at Marvel teased us with an ant-sized trailer preview for ‘Ant-Man,’ leaving us laughing and desperate to see the real deal. Thankfully, they didn’t leave us hanging for very long because today brings the regular-sized trailer preview—yes, it’s still just a teaser for the first teaser trailer, and it clocks in at just 17 seconds, but the few flashes we’re given are enough to stir up some additional excitement.
It’s the start of a new year and the start of a new month of Netflix Instant releases. January brings all 10 seasons of ‘Friends’ to the streaming service, as well as some old classics and new favorites, and several new seasons of television for you to binge-watch as needed. Ready your queues and read on for our guide to the newest releases hitting Netflix Instant in January 2015.
Tis the season for studios to release holiday-themed videos and e-cards featuring some of your favorite movie characters, and so far we’ve seen animated holiday greeting videos for ‘The Babadook,’ ‘Hotel Transylvania 2,’ and even SpongeBob Squarepants. But this new holiday video from Marvel takes things to a whole other level: it’s a stop-motion short featuring the villainous Thanos, who disguises himself as Santa for his latest evil plan … and then it sort of backfires.
Earlier today it was announced that Sony will release ‘The Interview’ in select theaters and on VOD this Christmas Day after all. Following the massive hacker attack on the company and subsequent terrorist threats from the group known as Guardians of Peace, Sony had no choice but to cancel the film’s release after major theater chains decided not to show the film. In a wonderful turn of events, following a petition from Art House Convergence, which was signed by many independent exhibitors, Sony is moving forward with the release. We have the full list of theaters that will screen the film this Thursday.
For years now, Paul Reubens has teased that an all-new ‘Pee-wee’ movie is in the works, but it was only over the course of the last year that the project finally became more of a reality. With Judd Apatow’s involvement and an official script locked in, Reubens revealed that production on the film is set to begin in 2015. But don’t count on seeing Pee-wee back on the big screen—he’s heading to Netflix.
Your Christmas gift from ‘Jurassic World’ has arrived early. Previously, the first trailer for the upcoming sequel had teased a moment near the end in which Chris Pratt’s character appeared to be teaming up with the super lethal velociraptors to take down the super-smart hybrid dinosaur wreaking havoc in the world’s most ill-advised theme park. And now director Colin Trevorrow has revealed this pretty rad new photo of Pratt hanging tough with one of his raptor pals.
Following today’s release of a message sent from the mysterious group responsible for the massive Sony hack, the company has now informed theater owners that they can opt out of screening ‘The Interview’ if they are concerned about the terrorist threat. Although the Department of Homeland Security responded by saying they could find “no credible info” on planned attacks, Sony has decided to place the decision to screen the film in the hands of theater executives.
Yes, it’s another round of leaked e-mails from that massive Sony hack, and yes, it’s another batch of information regarding the studio’s plans for their Spider-Man franchise. Following the underwhelming performance of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ Sony hasn’t quite known what to do with their only superhero property—and given that Spider-Man still has great franchise potential in the right creative hands, Sony appears to be coming at this problem from all angles. More leaked e-mails from the company shed light on Sony’s intentions to reboot the franchise yet again, as well as further details on their talks with Marvel for a crossover and how the directors of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ might be involved.
Back in September, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed through Twitter that he’s signed on to play the villainous Black Adam role in DC’s upcoming ‘Shazam’ movie. We’d been hearing rumors for a while that Johnson was getting in on the superhero business, and casting him as Black Adam is a rather inspired choice. But don’t expect Johnson to play a straightforward bad guy: the actor just teased some more hints about his “anti-hero” character.
‘Frozen’ was a huge hit: financially (it is the number one animated film of all time), commercially (can someone please tell my neighbors to stop watching YouTube videos of toddlers singing “Let It Go” already?), and critically. A sequel is all but guaranteed, although we haven’t gotten legitimate confirmation from Disney on a release date or firm plans for ‘Frozen 2' just yet—only a short film called ‘Frozen Fever,’ hitting theaters next Spring. Every time a cast member from the film is interviewed, the subject of a sequel has to come up, and it seems like maybe Idina Menzel—the voice of Elsa—may have just sort of confirmed a sequel on behalf of Disney.
