Weather Watch vs. Warning: Understanding Severe Weather Alerts in Texarkana
With all the severe weather we have been having it is good to go over a few terms that are used for weather alerts. It's great that we all get these alerts on the radio, TV and now fortunately on our phones, but what do they mean? When should we take action?
We get all types of weather alerts in Texarkana from thunderstorm watches and warnings to Tornado watches and warnings. With all these alerts being blasted at us, it can get a little daunting and even cause a little panic as you try to figure out what is going on. And in Texarkana, since we are a border town, we have to watch the weather in Texas and Arkansas.
Watch vs. Warning - Know When to Act in Texarkana
Once you understand the difference, you can take a breath and know when to relax and when to take action.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch vs. Warning: What Texarkana Residents Need to Know
The big difference to know about is between a Watch and a Warning.
Watches mean that conditions could be favorable soon for the said alert. So if there is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch, it means it 'watch for' for a storm, because one could happen in our area. But a Severe Thunderstorm Warning means there is a storm and it is heading your way. The same goes for Flash Flood watches and warnings.
A Watch means conditions are possible, so be on the lookout because it could happen.
A Warning means Danger is near, so be prepared because it is happening.
But, there is always a but...
With Tornado Warnings, things have changed a bit. Because of the newer technology, meteorologists are able to see the 'rotation' of clouds in a storm that could become a tornado.
Why Early Tornado Warnings Matter for Texarkana
Just a few years ago, a Tornado Warning meant a tornado had been spotted on the ground and moving in a specific direction. Now, you will need to read and listen closely when a tornado warning is issued. If they see a 'rotation' that means it is not a tornado yet, but could be very quickly. They are starting to issue tornado warnings when they see a rotation and they follow it. The new technology is so good it now gives us time that we never had before..and that is a good thing!
