Get Ready To Pay More At Waffle House Locations

Due to the ongoing bird flu epidemic, customers will pay an extra 50-cent surcharge for every egg ordered. The new surcharge went into effect on Monday and will be temporary until the epidemic gets under control. The bird flu has already dramatically raised the prices of eggs in grocery stores, with many stores reporting a shortage of eggs.

"Waffle House released a memo that read, "While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long the shortage will last."

Some Waffle House locations have posted notices on windows or their menus warning customers of the 50-cent egg surcharge.

The Labor Department reports that egg prices have shown nearly a 40 percent increase since January 2024, and prices could rise another 20 percent this year, according to the Agriculture Department.

According to a report from KARK-TV, in Little Rock, large egg farms house more than a million chickens if a few chickens come down with the bird flu it can affect the rest of the flock causing the egg supply chain to diminish rather quickly.

How Long Will This Last?

Officials say it can take months or longer to dispose of the infected birds, disinfect the facilities, and bring in more healthy birds. At this point, there's no telling how this bird flu epidemic will last so consumers of egg products need to be aware of the situation in the grocery stores and the Waffle House.

It's going to be interesting to me to see if any other restaurants that sell egg products will begin to follow what the Waffle House is doing with the 50-cent surcharge.
