Morris County/Naples, Texas To Get New Natural Gas Power Plant
Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation (AECC) is moving forward with plans to construct a 900-megawatt (MW) natural gas generation facility in Morris County, Texas, near Naples. Ground-breaking is scheduled for the summer of 2026, the plant is expected to be operational by 2029.
The facility will span about 100 acres and will feature two turbines in a simple cycle configuration, providing AECC with a highly efficient, low-emission resource to meet future wholesale energy needs. Located within the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) regional transmission organization (RTO), the plant will enhance grid reliability across the region.
According to the AECC website release,
"This facility is essential for ensuring reliable energy for our cooperative members," said AECC President and CEO Vernon "Buddy" Hasten. "The plant will deliver readily dispatchable energy for our 17 distribution cooperatives, serving around 600,000 members across Arkansas and parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Louisiana."
AECC selected the Morris County site for its proximity to natural gas pipelines and transmission infrastructure, following a thorough evaluation of potential locations, including several in Arkansas.
An open house was held on August 14 in Naples, Texas, to inform the local community about the project.
The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas consist of 17 distribution cooperatives, Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc. (AECI), and Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corp. (AECC), collectively serving about 600,000 homes, farms, and businesses in Arkansas and nearby states.
