Experts at sutterhealth.org suggest a backpack should not weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child's weight.

Yeah, easy to say but what is an easy way to figure that out? The easiest way is to take your child's weight and multiply it by .15 which will give you your child's maximum backpack weight.

For example, if your child weighs 50 pounds their backpack maximum weight is 7.5 pounds.

A child that weighs 100 pounds should carry a backpack at a maximum of 15 pounds.
A 150-pound kid can carry a backpack with a maximum of 22.5 pounds.
