First of all, don't panic. No dire predictions have come from the US Geological Survey, yet. However, a rather large portion of Arkansas sits on what is known as the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), which gives us a little shake about 200 times per year.

The US Geological Survey, the Earthquake monitoring people, says that most quakes are so mild they go completely unnoticed.  However, if a big one hits in the NMSZ it could be "devastating for many Arkansans." Their words, not mine.

Back in December, the community of Uncertain, Texas, right next to Caddo Lake felt a small 3.3 quake and anytime the windows rattle even a little bit, everyone wonders, is this the one? Read more about that shaker here:

What the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management is trying to tell us is the time to prepare is now, not after it happens.

What Does "Earthquake Preparedness" Look Like?

Basically, like most emergency preparedness situations, the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management recommends what they call, "2 Weeks Ready." Having a well-thought-out family plan of where to meet in case of an emergency, phones may not work, and a full 2 weeks of non-perishable food, water, and medical supplies to be able to take care of everyone in your immediate family and help those around you if you can.

The recent flooding in North Carolina is a prime example of how bad things can get and how badly the Government is capable of dropping the ball sometimes.

Americans are tough, resilient people, you know help is on the way, but sometimes it may be a while before it gets there. Be prepared to make it a while without it.
