Yesterday marked the 42nd anniversary of the day the Beatles unofficially split.  Paul McCartney's announcement that he was quitting the Beatles made front page news around the world.

Bands break up everyday. They get back together, go on hiatus from each other then get back together again. That was not a normal practice at the time. If you branched out and did a solo album then it was a done deal.

Funny thing is, the media ran with a press release that Paul McCartney had issued for the release of his solo album "McCartney".  History.com says, in the press release, Paul answered his own questions:

Q: "Is this album a rest away from the Beatles or the start of a solo career?"

PAUL: "Time will tell. Being a solo album means it's 'the start of a solo career...and not being done with the Beatles means it's just a rest. So it's both."

Q: "Is your break with the Beatles temporary or permanent, due to personal differences or musical ones?"

PAUL: "Personal differences, business differences, musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family. Temporary or permanent? I don't really know."

Q: "Do you foresee a time when Lennon-McCartney becomes an active songwriting partnership again?"

PAUL: "No."

Later that year, Paul did go to court and officially dissolved The Beatle partnership.

Fans blamed Yoko, then Linda. Yeah, it's always the wives fault...right?

I don't remember when the Beatle broke up, I was way to young. I do remember when I was about 9 years old, a friend and I were already huge fans. Our parents were trying to think of the best way to tell us that the Beatles had broken up 6 years earlier! They finally did, but we were 9 and had no clue as to what "breaking up" meant! So, we went on our merry way enjoying all things Beatle.

Here are some great interviews with each Beatle telling what really happen and why...
