What a huge treat for Texarkana! The American Shakespeare Center is coming to town for one performance only of Doctor Faustus on Tuesday, January 27 at the Sullivan Performing Arts Center and John Thomas Theatre on Summerhill Road.

According to Tina Veal-Gooch, the Director of Public Relations at the Texarkana Public School District, "The performance will be held in the Sullivan Performing Arts Center & John Thomas Theatre at 3941 Summerhill Road. Doors open and pre-show music begins at 6:30 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7 p.m."

By following the basic principles of Renaissance theatrical production such as universal lighting and doubling roles, the American Shakespeare Center gives its audiences some of the pleasures that an Elizabethan playgoer would have enjoyed. Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus predates almost all of Shakespeare’s plays. Faustus sells his soul, not for riches, but for knowledge and power. Marlowe weaves a shocking and contemporary tale of the struggle between good and evil, championing what is most daring in the human spirit. He breathtakingly conjures Helen of Troy, the Seven Deadly Sins, angels, demons and Satan himself, before dragging Faustus to Hell.

Tickets are $5 and available for purchase at the Texarkana Independent School District Administrative Office, 4241 Summerhill Road, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
