This gallery showing of comic book heroes places them in a retirement home and forgets about them. At least that's how it looks from these photos. French artist Gilles Barbier calls this work 'L'Hospice.' Leave it to a French guy to take something cool and make it depressing.

What could have happened to Superman that would require him to use a walker? Nothing but the bleak, ceaseless pressure of time that will inevitably crush us all, weak or strong. And what trials could have made poor Catwoman so haggard and sleepy? Most likely 'la crainte de l'ennui' -- that is, the dread of the never-ending darkness that sits at the feet of her soul.

Doesn't the Incredible Hulk have some relatives that visit from time to time who could bring him some pants that aren't ripped? Is someone forcing Wonder Woman to wear her costume? It looks uncomfortable.

And for goodness' sake, can someone pick up Mr. Fantastic's hand and put it back on the table?
