The reveal of Legendary Pictures' 'Skull Island' was one of the few genuine surprises of this year's Comic-Con. The studio already had a teaser for the film set on the infamous island inhabited by King Kong, dinosaurs and other terrifying monsters, but it was lacking just about everything else. Now, those gaps are starting to get filled: Jordan Vogt-Roberts has signed on to direct, Tom Hiddleston will star, and the film itself will hit theaters on November 4, 2016.

We still don't know much about film's plot, but it looks like the film will offer a very different take on the 'King Kong' mythos than we've seen before. Don't expect to see a 50-foot ape rampaging through New York City this time around. It sounds like this thing is going to focus on the giant ape in his home turf. Here's the closest thing the official announcement has to a plot synopsis:

Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.

Every version of 'King Kong' has spent time on Skull Island, but it was at its most memorable in the 1933 original and Peter Jackson's 2005 remake. Both of those versions fill every square foot of the island with astonishing monsters with a taste for human flesh. This is one of the most dangerous locations in movie history, so it's hard to say no to an entire film set there.

Vogt-Roberts is a newcomer to the realm of big-budget blockbusters. He helmed the indie darling 'The Kings of Summer' a few years back and has directed his fair share of television (including FX's 'You're the Worst'), but 'Skull Island' represents a huge step up for him. As for his leading man, Hiddleston is best known as the villainous Loki in the Marvel cinematic universe movies, but he's on the fast track to becoming a leading man. This will be the second Legendary production with his name first in the credits, with the other being the upcoming Guillermo del Toro haunted house movie, 'Crimson Peak.'

The only thing left to do now is to wait. It's about time King Kong came back and it's about time a new film about him didn't retread the same beats as every other version. Color us very, very intrigued about 'Skull Island.'
