Recycling a Hit in Texarkana

Last year was a good one for the recycling program in Texarkana, Arkansas

The City of Texarkana, Arkansas, is pleased to announce that recycling in the city increased 55% in 2013 over amounts collected in 2012. The total collection of recyclable materials in 2013 was 184,438 lbs. (92.2 tons). In 2012 the City collected 119,360 lbs. (59.7 tons)

New programs that were added in 2013 brought in 18 tons of paper and cardboard. These included the City’s mobile recycling trailers and agreements with commercial locations and school campuses for collection.

“These numbers show that the public took advantage of the new recycling opportunities we introduced last year and kept 36,400 pounds of waste out of our landfill,” said Brandy Chewning, the City’s recycling coordinator. “I am so proud of everyone who made the effort to recycle in 2013. Hopefully we can create even more outreach programs in the future until recycling is available to every resident.”

The mixed materials collected through Green Texarkana, the City’s monthly recycling collection event, increased from 60 tons in 2012 to almost 74 tons in 2013. Those materials include paper, plastic, cardboard, electronics, ink and toner cartridges and small metal pieces. Green Texarkana is made possible through continued partnerships with Waste Management, Richardson Waste Inc., and the UNICOR electronics recycling program at the Federal Correctional Institution.
