An injury to Paul Stanley forced Kiss to do something they've only done once before in their career. For their headlining slot at the Race to Erase MS benefit last night (April 15), they performed without him.

Stanley broke the news last night on his Facebook page. "Tore my bicep tendon," he wrote. "Surgery reattached it with a screw and stitches to anchor in place. Not much I can do now!" Seven hours later, he conveyed his doctor's prognosis. "Thanks to my AMAZING doctor I WILL be great & ready to rock WAAAAYYYY before the tour! CAN'T WAIT! #‎FreedomToRock‬"

According to the Washington Post, Kiss played four songs at the concert, which took place at the Beverly Hills Hilton and also featured Eric Benet, David Foster and Jordan Smith, the winner of The Voice. Video of the last two songs, "Cold Gin" and "Rock and Roll All Nite," is embedded above. The evening raised more than $250,000 for multiple sclerosis research.

Kiss has only performed without Stanley on one other occasion. In 2007, a heart issue caused Stanley to be rushed to the hospital prior to their concert at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, Calif. "During sound check yesterday," he wrote, "my heart spontaneously jumped to 190 plus beats per minute where it stayed for over an hour necessitating paramedics to start an IV and give me a shot to momentarily stop my heart and get it into a normal pattern."

The only other time Kiss played as a trio was on Jan. 28, 1982. That day, Ace Frehley reportedly refused to show up to lip-sync "I" from Music From 'The Elder' at New York's Studio 54, which was being beamed via satellite to the San Remo Music Festival in Italy. Frehley left the band shortly thereafter.

As Stanley pointed out, his injury is not likely to affect their Freedom to Rock tour, which begins July 7 at the Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho. The two-month stretch will see them playing mostly cities they haven't visited in more than 10 years. You can see all the dates here.
